Session: Advance Auto Parts and Open Source
Advance Auto Parts to drive Open Source projects
Advance Auto Parts was founded in 1932 when Arthur Taubman purchased a small chain of home and auto supply stores in Roanoke, VA. At that time, technology as we know it was non-existent! Fast forward to 2020. Advance Auto Parts is now a Fortune 500 corporation, which could not operate without technology.
Adolfo Rodriguez, SVP of IT Transformation, joined Advance to propel the company on a new journey where technology is also generating business.
In this talk, Adolfo will introduce Advance Auto Parts and why technology is so important for a forward-looking organization like ours. He will then explore the increasing role of Open Source in the company and how Advance Team Members engage through using and contributing to Open Source projects. Open Source has become such an important culture at Advance that a grassroots movement pushed for sharing some of the technology developed in the company. This is how, under Adolfo’s leadership, Advance Open Source Garage is born.
Advance Auto Parts is the first large scale retailer in the aftermarket auto parts to launch such an initiative, in line with its ambitions for technology.
In the second part of the talk, Jean-Georges Perrin will talk more specifically about Advance Open Source Garage’s first project. Released under the business-friendly Apache 2.0 license, Data in the Fast Lane (DFL) is a scalable and extensible data-oriented tool that performs traditional extract, transform, and load (ETL) operations. However, DFL is based on modern technologies, can be scripted or embedded in your applications, allows a strong separation of roles, and a lot more. Jean-Georges will demo the tool and explain how to get started.
