Director, Open Source Programs Office, Microsoft
Stormy Peters is Director of the Open Source Programs Office at Microsoft. She works with people and teams across Microsoft to help make sure Microsoft uses and contributes to open source software in a way that makes it possible for the world to achieve more through open source software.
MIKE HARTINGTON
Developer Advocate, Ionic
Mike Hartington is a developer, Angular GDE, and Ionic Developer Advocate who’s been working in the mobile landscape for most of his professional career. When he’s not working Ionic itself, Mike works with community members and helps them succeed at mobile. In his spare time, he’s an aspiring woodworker, occasional musician, and craft beer lover.
JARED PONCHOT
Chief Creative Officer, Lullabot
Jared Ponchot is the Chief Creative Officer at Lullabot where he helps lead a talented, fully distributed team of strategists, designers, and developers. Over the years they’ve designed and built sites for well-known brands and institutions like NBC, IBM, This Old House, Syfy, Intel, Harvard, MIT, and more. Lullabot’s focus on projects with large editorial teams managing complex content models has helped Jared and his team build unique expertise when it comes to creating design systems that work at scale. Jared loves helping organizations use design thinking to simplify complexity, find focus, build alignment, and make great experiences for the audiences they serve.
ARI VANIDERSTINE
Developer Advocate, Embark Studios
Ari Vaniderstine is a Canadian immigrant living in Sweden. They’re currently working on developer community at Embark Studios, a game studio building a platform to empower everyone to create games. They learned to code through hackathons, and love teaching creative people to build using technology. Previously, Ari worked on Developer Experience at Spotify and as a technical consultant for software startups. When they grow up, they want to be a Pokémon trainer.
VASUDHA SWAMINATHAN
Director of Product, Stack Overflow
Vasudha Swaminathan is a product manager motivated by the drive to design and create increasingly customer centric products and services. An engineer at heart, she loves to solve problems that involve technology and comes with diverse product experience in casual gaming, stock photography, cloud computing, and more recently, tools for community driven knowledge management. She is currently Director of Product at Stack Overflow, for the Teams product suite. When she’s not working, you’ll find her playing with her 6 year old daughter, listening to old Indian melodies, or watching Marvel movies again and again, and again!
RICARDO ARAVENA
SRE Manager, Rakuten
Ricardo Aravena currently works at Rakuten as an SRE Manager, automating everything in containers using open source. He’s a co-chair of the CNCF SIG-Runtime and Kata Containers project contributor. He has been working in tech for more than 20 years and comes from a diverse professional background, having been in different roles at large companies such as Cisco and VMware as well as startups such as Coupa, Hytrust, Exablox, and SnapLogic. Most recently he was at Branch Metrics where he spent 2 years working on automating their cloud infrastructure to handle millions of requests and petabytes of data on a daily basis.
BEN BROMHEAD
Chief Technology Officer, Instaclustr
Ben Bromhead is the Chief Technology Officer and a co-founder at Instaclustr, which provides open source data-layer technologies as a managed service. Ben is located in Instaclustr’s California office, and he is active in the open source Apache Cassandra community. Prior to Instaclustr, Ben had been working as an independent consultant developing NoSQL solutions for enterprises and he ran a high-tech cryptographic and cyber security formal testing laboratory at BAE Systems and Stratsec.
TERRENCE PUGH
Developer Ecosystem & Open Source Lead, NSA
Terrence Pugh has served as a software engineer for the National Security Agency for over six years. Mr. Pugh has earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Norfolk State University and is currently working on his doctorate at Towson University. Mr. Pugh enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons as well as building collaborative communities to support developers in his spare time.
MAURICIO TEIXEIRA
Principal Systems Administrator, Red Hat
Mauricio Teixeira has over 20 years of experience in various infrastructure roles, ranging from small ISPs to large manufacturing corporations, including a few years as instructor/facilitator. Mauricio is currently focusing on continuous improvements on infrastructure services, mainly related to automation and integration across various basic services (DNS, Monitoring, VPN, among many others). Ping-ponging between on-premise datacenter and cloud infrastructure provides a wide range of experiences and knowledge.
LILLY WINFREE
Product Manager, Open Knowledge Foundation
Lilly Winfree is the Product Owner of the open source Frictionless Data for Reproducible Research Project at Open Knowledge Foundation, where she solves researchers’ technical data management issues. She has her PhD in neuroscience, and has been active in the open data, open source, and open science communities for five years. Lilly has given numerous conference presentations and workshops over the past decade, and enjoys presenting technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences. Outside of work, you’ll find her hanging out with her dogs, running, baking, eating tacos, or reading sci-fi.
PJ HAGERTY
Chief Community Officer, DEVRELATE.IO
PJ Hagerty is the founder of DevRelate.io and a board member of Open Sourcing Mental Illness. He is an organizer of DevOps Days Buffalo, CodeDaze, and ElixirDaze. PJ is a developer, writer, speaker, musician, and Community Advocate. He is known to travel the world speaking about programming and the way people think and interact. He is also known for wearing hats.
MARY THENGVALL
Director, Developer Relations, Camunda
Mary Thengvall is a connector of people at heart, personally and professionally. She loves digging into the strategy of how to build and foster developer communities and has been doing so for over 10 years. Mary is the Director of Developer Relations at Camunda, an open source process automation company that helps companies around the world automate their systems. She’s the author of the first book on Developer Relations, "The Business Value of Developer Relations" (© 2018, Apress).
JAMES QUICK
Developer Advocate, AuthO
James Quick is a developer, speaker, and teacher with a passion for Web Development. He is a Senior Developer Advocate at Auth0 and has over 7 years of experience in Advocacy and Software Development. In his spare time, he runs a YouTube channel, plays co-ed soccer with his wife, spends time with his dogs, and can solve a Rubik’s cube in under a minute.
JEFF LUSZCZ
Consultant, Zebracatzebra
Jeff Luszcz was the Founder and CTO of Palamida, one of the first open source discovery and vulnerability management tools. Since 2004, he has helped hundreds of software companies understand how to best use open source while complying with their license obligations and keeping on top of security issues. He has directed professional services teams responsible for open source compliance and security audits. His teams have performed reviews for some of the largest mergers and acquisitions in the technology industry. He consults with companies on the topics of compliance, remediation, and security.
SAM BASU
Developer Advocate, Progress Software
Sam Basu is a technologist, author, speaker, Microsoft MVP, gadget-lover and Developer Advocate at Progress Software. With a long developer background, he now spends much of his time advocating modern development platforms & tools on Microsoft/Telerik technology stacks. His spare times call for travel, fast cars, cricket and culinary adventures. You can find him on the internet.
DEB NICHOLSON
Interim General Manager, Open Source Initiative
Deb Nicholson is a free software policy expert and a passionate community advocate. She is the Interim Genral Manager at the Open Source Inititative where she supports the open source community through governance and infrastructure. Formerly, she has served as Director of Community Operations at Software Freedom Conservancy, a non-profit dedicated to software freedom for everyone and the Community Outreach Director for the Open Invention Network, a shared defensive patent pool on a mission to protect free and open source software and the Membership Coordinator for the Free Software Foundation. She’s won the O’Reilly Open Source Award for her work with GNU MediaGoblin, a federated media-hosting service and OpenHatch, free software’s welcoming committee. She is also a founding organizer of the Seattle GNU/Linux Conference, an annual event dedicated to surfacing new voices and welcoming new people to the free software community. She lives with her husband and her lucky black cat in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
ERIOL FOX
Designer, Open Food Network & Open Source Design
Eriol Fox is a Design Lead who has worked in-house for 10 years. Eriol now works at Open Food Network working on the future of open and sustainable food systems tools and works on human rights projects through their consultancy Humanitarian.design. Before that, they worked at Ushahidi, a non-profit developing open-source, digital tools to help people with democratic processes, human rights, and crises like typhoons, earthquakes and terrorism.
Eriol is a non-binary, queer person who uses they/them pronouns and an LGBTQIA+ advocate.
JOHN MERTIC
Director, Open Mainframe Project & Director of Program Management, Linux Foundation
John Mertic is the Director of Program Management for The Linux Foundation. Under his leadership, he has helped ASWF, ODPi, Open Mainframe Project, and R Consortium accelerate open source innovation and transform industries. John has an open source career spanning two decades, both as a contributor to projects such as SugarCRM and PHP, and in open source leadership roles at SugarCRM, OW2, and OpenSocial. With an extensive open source background, he is a regular speaker at various Linux Foundation and other industry trade shows each year. John is also an avid writer and has authored two books “The Definitive Guide to SugarCRM: Better Business Applications” and “Building on SugarCRM” as well as published articles on IBM Developerworks, Apple Developer Connection, and PHP Architect.
AVINDRA FERNANDO
Senior UI Engineer, Balance Innovations
Avindra Fernando is a passionate developer, conference speaker, and mentor. He has over 7 years of experience in designing and architecting real-time web applications, automating workflows, and mentoring fellow engineers. Avindra was also a lecturer at The University of Kansas, where he taught ‘System Integration and Architecture’. When he is not coding, he loves to travel and experience new cultures and places.
JACKIE GOLDSCHMIDT
Senior Data Engineer, Tech Co.
Jackie Goldschmidt is a senior data engineer at Tech co. Jackie started working with data as a Monroe Scholar and AidData research assistant at William and Mary. Since then Jackie has worked at startups in advertising technology and healthcare. She has experience using data science tools to build visualizations and back end applications, as well as extract insights that drive business value. She’s passionate about learning new technology, startups, and the Zen of python.
GAVIN JOHNSON
Principal Product Marketing Manager, Open Source, New Relic
Gavin Johnson is a programmer-turned-product marketer with experience in IT, tech consulting, and product marketing. At New Relic, he works with our open source team on community engagement and product awareness. Before joining New Relic, Gavin attended business school at the University of Southern California. He’s worked for Deloitte Digital as a Senior Consultant and Manager, designing and delivering custom applications for clients, and at AT&T as a Lead Product Marketing Manager for their digital video products. An Oregon native, Gavin now lives in Los Angeles. He is happily married, has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is a photographer, homebrewer, and former marathoner.
JADE APPLEGATE
Open Source Program Manager, Indeed
Jade Applegate supports the Open Source Program Office at Indeed. Prior to this role, she was a founding member of the UX engineering team and an engineering program manager at Fastly. Jade especially loves to help first-time contributors find an open source project that resonates with them and help get them started with their first pull request.
RANDY OLINGER
Distinguished Engineer, OPTUM Technology
Randy Olinger has built a 30 year software engineering career spanning multiple disciplines, from enterprise grade storage architecture to infrastructure as code expertise. He is an astute observer of industry trends, opportunities and problems which inevitably arise from rapid evolution in the modern technology landscape. Randy is excited to participate in this year’s edition of All Things Open.
MATTHIAS CRAUWELS
Lead Database Consultant, Pythian
Since the age of 10, Matthias Crauwels has been passionate about computers and has been working with them ever since. In 2005, Matthias recieved a degree in computer science. He used to work at a major Belgian university where he developed the e-learning applications. In that position, Matthias looked after the databases. From there, he grew to be their MySQL DBA. In 2017, he left the university and joined Pythian as a MySQL Database Consultant. Currently he is a Lead Database Consultant in one of Pythian’s MySQL teams.
JOSEPH CASTLE
Product Owner & Front-End Engineer, Code.Gov/U.S. General Services Administration
Joe Castle is a Product Owner and Front-end Engineer of Code.gov. He advises federal agencies and their open source representatives on how to implement the Federal Source Code Policy (FSCP). He was once an executive agency representative open sourcing GSA. His passion is open source software creation and reuse by software automation and recently finished a PhD with a dissertation focused on organizational factors affecting open source software publication in the federal government. Career highlights include time in the Obama Administration, a campaign in Haiti while serving in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, and national and international speaking engagements.
JENNIFER WITKOWSKI
Senior UX Designer, Lullabot
Jen Witkowski has over 10 years of experience working on everything from mobile apps to websites, including some branding and print work. She’s used that experience at Lullabot working with such clients as MSNBC, This Old House, the NYU School of Medicine, IBM, Carnegie Mellon University, and Ames Laboratory. Her work has ranged from creating intuitive user experiences for intricate, data-dense apps to designing navigational solutions for complex website hierarchies.
ROBIN MOFFATT
Senior Developer Advocate, Confluent
Robin Moffat is a Senior Developer Advocate at Confluent, the company founded by the original creators of Apache Kafka, as well as an Oracle ACE Director (Alumnus). He has been speaking at conferences since 2009 including QCon, Devoxx, Strata, Kafka Summit, and Øredev. Outside of work he enjoys drinking good beer and eating fried breakfasts, although generally not at the same time.

Shaun Lamb works as an IT Security Architect at SAS Institute where he focuses on application security. With a background in web application development, he strives to design solutions that make it easy for developers and administrators to apply security controls.
AMBER GRANER
Director of Community, Corelight Inc.
Amber Graner’s open source journey started in 2009 when she started blogging about Ubuntu. Since then she’s written for Ubuntu User Magazine, co-authored The Official Ubuntu Book (6th & 7th edit.) and served as a technical reviewer for Jono Bacon’s Art of Community. She was the first Community Manager for Linaro (Linux on ARM) and went on to help architect and manage the Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation Community where she later became the Operations Director. Today she is the Director of Community at Corelight Inc.
